How to play

There are 3 ways to win Splatatat
1. Be the last player remaining in the game
2. Be the first player to have no cards remaining in hand
3. Be the first player to have only SPLAT CARDS of their colour remaining in hand
Revealing remaining SPLAT CARDS must be a player's final turn. They cannot play a card then reveal.

Setup

Each player chooses a character to play as and places their two FACE CARDS in front of them.
LIFE CARDS
The deck consists of SPLAT CARDS, SLAMMY CARDS and one 'S' CARD.
SPLAT CARDS
SLAMMY CARDS
'S' CARD
Remove any colour SPLAT CARDS that don't match the colour of FACE CARDS being used in the game.

Start

Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player before placing the deck in the middle.
Starting left of the dealer going around clockwise, each player must either play or pick up a card when it is their turn.
A player can only do one thing each turn, they cannot play multiple cards or pick up a card and put one down.
To play a card the player has the option to attack another player, save themselves or play a SLAMMY CARD or the 'S' CARD.
If a player cannot, or doesn't want to play a card, they must pick up a card from the deck.
If there are no cards left in the deck, their turn is skipped.

Splat

Splat other players by playing a SPLAT CARD of their colour on their FACE CARD.
Attacks must start with a 1 kill card.
Only cards of matching colour can be played.
Splats must be played in sequence: 123
The same number card can be played as part of the splat sequence, e.g.: 1223
Only one splat sequence can be played at a time.

Save

Players can save themselves by playing a SPLAT CARD in their own colour of the same number on their FACE CARD when it is their turn.
Different colour SPLAT CARDS cannot be played to save.
Different number SPLAT CARDS cannot be played to save.
Only SPLAT CARDS in the players own colour of the same number can be played to save themselves. When a player saves themselves all SPLAT CARDS are removed from their FACE CARDS (including the card they played to save themselves) and are put to the bottom of the deck.

Splatatat!

When a player has a '3' SPLAT CARD played on their FACE CARDS, they are forced to save themselves when it's their turn. If a SLAMMY CARD is played before their turn, they must action the SLAMMY CARD first (cont.)
If a player cannot save themselves, one of their FACE CARDS becomes Splatatat! (turned over to frown face) and they have to pick up two cards. All SPLAT CARDS that were on the player's FACE CARD are then put to the bottom of the deck.
If one FACE CARD is already Splatatat! and the player cannot defend, their second FACE CARD becomes Splatatat! and they are out of the game! All cards in their hand are put to the bottom of the deck.
Other players can still play SPLAT CARDS to the players who are out of the game when it is their turn (only one card at a time), but no sequence is required.

'S' Card

The 'S' CARD can be played 3 different ways. It can only be played one way each time it is played. Each time the 'S' CARD is played, it is shuffled back into the deck once it has been actioned.
1. Played as an undefendable SPLAT CARD
This can be done at any point in a splat sequence (cont.)
even when a player has no SPLAT CARDS played on them. The receiving player doesn't action the 'S' CARD until it is their turn. If a SLAMMY CARD is played before their turn, they must action the SLAMMY CARD first, then action the 'S' CARD played on them on their next turn (cont.)
When actioned, one of their FACE CARDS becomes Splatatat! (turned over to frown face) and they have to pick up two cards. The 'S' CARD and any SPLAT CARDS that were on the player's FACE CARDS are shuffled back into the deck.
If one FACE CARD is already Splatatat!, their second FACE CARD becomes Splatatat! and they are out of the game!
2. Played as a save card
The 'S' CARD removes all SPLAT CARDS from their FACE CARDS (cont.)
This can be done at any point in a splat sequence. The 'S' CARD and any SPLAT CARDS that were on the player's FACE CARDS are then shuffled back into the deck.
3. Played to return a FACE CARD from Splatatat!
The 'S' CARD resurrects a FACE CARD that is Splatatat! (frown face back to smiley face). The 'S' CARD is then shuffled back into the deck.

Slammy Cards

SLAMMY CARDS are played to the middle and are not returned to the deck, except for the SWAPSIES card!
Swap all cards in hand with another player. Each time the SWAPSIES CARD is played it is shuffled back into the deck.
All other players pick up 2 cards (and player gets another turn)
The next player picks up 2 cards as their turn.
Reverse playing order (or skips a players turn if played with 2 people).

Alternative Game Play

These rules are recommended as the best way to play the game

That’s not to say it is the only way to play the game, these are a few suggestions for alternative game play
SUDDEN SPLATATAT!

Have more than 6 players or want a quicker version of the game?

Try playing with only one FACE CARD per player.

For 5- 8 players players only deal 5 cards to each player at the start
NO FUN

Don't like the unpredictability of the SWAPSIES CARD?

Try removing the SWAPSIES CARD from the deck or only allow it be played once and not returned to the deck
CO-OP

Play in teams of 2 with each team member getting 1 FACE CARD of the same colour each

If a team member's FACE CARD is Splatatat! they are out of the game, unless their team member plays the 'S' CARD on them to return them to the game (The player has to pick up 5 cards from the deck to return to the game)
MOST SPLATATATS!

Want a more inclusive version of the game where no one gets knocked out?

Try awarding points to players each time they Splatatat! another player. In this version players aren't knocked out of the game and they do not win by getting rid of all their cards, the only way to win is be the player with the most Splatatats! at the end. This works best to set a time limit or a Splatatat! target (ie first player to 10 Splatatats! wins).
HOUSE RULES

Think the game would work better with different rules?

Make up your own rules to the game, but be sure to inform all players of your house rules before playing and if they are awesome tell us about them
